Murky water the color of café' au lait rushed from the Atchafalaya River into a manmade channel, standing out in stark contrast to the dark, clear water of the swamp. Turbulence created small whirlpools as the water's direction was shifted, sweeping sand up from the river bottom and carrying it into the lakes and bayous of the Atchafalaya Basin.
