Hugely Popular Christmas Pop-Up Bar to Hit New Orleans for the First Time - [Eater New Orleans - All]

A Christmas Miracle pop-up from 2017 | Miracle Pop-up/Official Photo

The international Miracle Christmas pop-up will take over Longway Tavern and Barrel Proof starting next week

Dust off your Santa hats and ugliest Christmas sweater, because the internationally sought-out Christmas Miracle pop-up is coming to New Orleans for the first time, taking over craft cocktail institutions Barrel Proof and Longway Tavern.

Featuring punnily-named cocktails and over-the-top Christmas decorations, the pop-up started in New York’s East Village in 2014, when Greg Boehm transformed his newly acquired unfinished bar space into a winter wonderland. The idea came from his mother, who during a trip to Tibet had an epiphany and called the entrepreneur to share her vision; “don’t do construction in December, open up a Christmas bar.”

With the help of Joann Spiegel, Miracle has made appearances all over the world including pop-ups in Greece, Montreal, Paris, and Hong Kong. In its fifth year, Spiegel and Boehm will continue spreading holiday cheer throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Central America.

Boehm is considered one of the most influential figures in the craft cocktail world. His fascination with cocktails began after acquiring a copy of Salvatore Calabrese’s 1997 Classic Cocktails, eventually amassing a curated compilation of over 3,000 cocktail book titles dating back to the 17th century. His obsession led him to research and source tools and barware from all over the world (he’s credited for the revival of the Moscow Mule copper mug), which is how his company, Cocktail Kingdom, became the go-to outlet for any serious bartender’s purchases.

Boehm is Jewish, but he would celebrate Christmas in his grandparents’ basement, whose collection of ornaments would become the inspiration for Miracle’s over-the-top retro decor. In addition to garland, twinkle lights, bows, and Christmas stockings, the Instagram-famous Santa mugs and festive glassware will be at the center of the cocktail creations, including the “Koala-La La La, La La La La” with gin, pine liqueur, and vermouth, garnished with a tiny koala wearing a Santa hat, and the Yippie Ki Yay Mother F****r! made with two kinds of rum, cachaça, and marshmallow orgeat.

“Even though the drinks have a lot of components, they are all super approachable and coincidentally have the same laid back and informal likeness that we pride ourselves on at Barrel Proof,” says bar manager Jason Sorbae. Both bars will offer the holiday-inspired cocktail menu full time; Longway will continue to serve its full food menu and Barrel Proof will still honor it’s usual half-priced happy hour.

In 2015, Miracle spawned a tiki-themed sister beach-style bar, Sippin’ Santa. In 2018, New Orleans own tikiphile and influential cocktail personality Jeff “Beachbum” Berry partnered with the company to curate a program that’s popping up in 27 locations nationwide, including his acclaimed local watering hole Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29.

Miracle will take over Longway and Barrel Proof from Monday, November 25 to December 31, and Sippin’ Santa returns to Latitude 29 on Monday, November 25.

A merry, colorful city becomes even more so throughout December

Al Copeland’s famed Christmas lights may now belong to New Orleans’ ever-growing cache of “ain’t dere no more” lore—but there are plenty of other new and established ways to enjoy the December tradition of holiday light-gazing. As the year comes to a close, hotspots around the city will be illuminated by everything from twinkling palm trees to projection mapping installations. Here are some of the best light displays in town.

A licensed bed-and-breakfast in Algiers Point wants $550K - [Curbed New Orleans - All]

A traditional Victorian double shotgun home, exterior

The double shotgun home was built in the 1800s

Algiers Point might be the most Mayberry-esque neighborhood in New Orleans. That’s because of its small-town vibes, quaint collection of cafes and bars, paved levee trails, and neighborhood traditions (fireworks viewing, Christmas bonfires, and a summer concert series, to name a few). Algiers Point also has some of the lowest crime rates in Orleans Parish.

Situated on the West Bank, it’s a five-minute ferry ride across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans—and while that distance is a deterrent for some urbanites, it’s a boon for homeowners who prefer a little peace and quiet to go with their traditional New Orleans architecture.

You’ll find Eastlake Victorian and Craftsman-era residential buildings in abundance at prices lower than those of their downtown peers. Case in point: this circa-1800s double shotgun, which is a licensed bed-and-breakfast, is asking $550,000. The bed-and-breakfast license for “La Maison de la Musique” is included in the price.

Remodeled in 2014, the 2,485-square-foot home features a Maria Theresa crystal chandelier, ceiling medallion, crown molding, original pocket doors, wood floors, and 12-foot ceilings. A living room spans the entirety of the front, and most of the former double shotgun has been converted to a large single-family home. However, in the rear, one side of the former double houses a rental unit consisting of a living room with kitchenette, a bedroom, and a bathroom. This unit has its own separate side entrance. All in all, the home has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths.

Christmas eve bonfires on the levee

The earliest bonfires on the levees were relatively simple in design and assembly, with long logs arranged into a pyramid-shaped cone, some as high as twenty feet. Shorter horizontal logs holding the structure in place gave it a ladder-like appearance. Most of today’s bonfires still incorporate that design, but more imaginative creations have since evolved. Some of the most elaborate structures resemble old Cajun cabins, pickup trucks and other indigenous cultural motifs.

At dusk, usually around 7:00 p.m., the structures are doused with flammable liquids and set ablaze, lighting the sky and the surrounding area with towering flames that would be impossible for Papa Noël and his reindeer to miss. The crowds that gather to watch these spectacular conflagrations enjoy a free show and, in some locales, free bowls of hot gumbo are served up by local residents. The blazes are often accompanied by displays of fireworks, set off by the fires themselves.
