Louisiana horse owners put on alert for equine disease | AP | NOLA.com
Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says a tick-borne disease has shown up in Texas and that horse owners in Louisiana should be on the alert.
The disease is called equine piroplasmosis, or EP for short. It's a tick-borne disease caused by microscopic parasites of the red bloods cells.

Fair Grounds aims big with Louisiana Derby, potential showdown race | Thoroughbred Times
The Louisiana Derby will move back two weeks on the 2010 calendar to March 27, with a $150,000 purse boost to $750,000 and a distance change from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/8 miles, a major change to the Triple Crown prep schedule that will provide a direct bridge to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) at sister track Churchill Downs.
