Jazz Fest inspires renewed backlash in fight over Airbnb, other short-term rentals | The Advocate

Renting out rooms or entire apartments or homes during Jazz Fest, the annual two-weekend event, has been a longstanding tradition for some residents, but the advent of Airbnb has turned the practice into a major business. And that has inspired backlash.

According to a news release from the short-term rental site, 20,000 people in town for Jazz Fest this year are staying in short-term rentals they found through the site. The release said there are 15 different neighborhoods in the city where more than 200 people booked homes or rooms through the site.

The website couched that as a positive for the city, estimating that those visitors will generate $12 million in economic activity at local businesses or restaurants.

That’s not a view shared by all, particularly in some of the neighborhoods where short-term rentals offered through Airbnb and other sites like VRBO are most prevalent.

Ace Hotel plans to add New Orleans location | New Orleans City Business

A project underway to redevelop a former office building downtown into a new hotel property will open next year under the Ace Hotel brand, the company announced Tuesday.

The Portland, Oregon hotel chain confirmed it would  open a 234-room Ace Hotel in the nine-story Art Deco office building at 600 Carondelet St. A $34 million construction project began last fall and is expected to wrap up in early 2016.

The project is being developed by the Domain Companies, which is also building the $250 million South Market District project nearby. Domain purchased the 136,000-square-foot building and an adjacent parking lot in 2013 for $5.5 million and announced development of an unnamed hotel soon after.

Spirited Renovation for W New Orleans French Quarter | Huffington Post

When W New Orleans French Quarter hotel first revealed its redesigned Marie Laveau themed room, hospitality staff entering to clean the room saw the giant image of the Voodoo Queen and responded: "Oh, HELL no." The design team noted that the difference between a nod to Voodoo and full on Voodoo is significant in New Orleans. Rooms were redesigned accordingly, with more subtle touches. Anurag Nema, principal at nemaworkshop, says you can see Laveau's eyes on the guest room placard, or her headdress on a directional sign but there is no giant Voodoo Queen watching you sleep. This makes the W's comfortable beds far more restful. On alternate floors, the jazz-themed rooms have a nod to New Orleans musicians with a floor-to-ceiling image modeled after the brass bell of a horn.
