Beyond the French Quarter: Experiencing New Orleans Like a Local | Vogue

At the heart of it all is the city’s architectural and historic center, the French Quarter. But anyone who has spent time visiting New Orleans can tell you that the French Quarter of today—choked with souvenir shops, dive bars, and rowdy tourists—is a far cry from the interesting, bohemian haven it was a century ago.

That said, there are still two reasons you should go on a quick stroll through the Quarter: first, to try the iconic beignets at Café du Monde (but only after a night at the bar, so as to avoid the overwhelming daytime lines); and second, to shop for sunglasses at the beautiful Royal Street store of Krewe, runner-up for the 2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize.

50 mind-blowing bars and New Orleans' music scene are focus of new travel books | Chicago Tribune

To say that music is everywhere in New Orleans is to state the obvious, but it still bears repeating. Indeed, author Michael Murphy reports there are more than 100 live-music venues in the Crescent City. He also notes that you can hear live music at a jazz brunch, in hotel lobbies, on dinner cruises and even in bowling alleys. Of course, music is heard in the city's many clubs, bars, dance halls and juke joints.

Study: New Orleans residents do not like tourists | Stratos Jets

Tourism. It’s a trillion-dollar industry that has a positive economic impact on countless businesses and their employees in destinations all over the country. 10 years after Katrina, New Orleans’ tourism industry reborn | wric

AP Photo/Gerald Herbert, File

Ten years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the city’s tourism has not only rebounded. It’s practically been reinvented.

New Orleans had just 3.7 million visitors in 2006, the first full year after Katrina. Last year, there were 9.5 million visitors. The city has 600 more restaurants than 10 years ago. And hotel occupancy rates are higher than they were before the levees broke Aug. 29, 2005, flooding 80 percent of the city and killing hundreds.

New Orleans culinary tours | USA TODAY

Photo: Sam Hanna

New Orleans and eating go together like feathers and Mardi Gras. It's impossible to experience one without the other. In a town with more than 1,300 restaurants, most independent and locally owned, the moveable feast never ends.

Locals are passionate about iconic dishes that reflect this port city's historic gumbo of cultures, from African, French and Spanish to Italian, Irish and Southeast Asian. Typical Creole fare is on the rich side -- simmered seafood bisques, local trout swabbed in buttery Meunière sauce and garlicky étouffée larded with crawfish and sausage.

Beyond the beignets: New Orleans’ modern food movement | Lonely Planet

New Orleans is a food city, no question; it always has been. No offense to those hearty regional faves – gumbo, jambalaya and the ubiquitous beignets – but the association has long been one of over-indulgence rather than variety and refinement. The good news: a number of the city’s recently opened establishments are now breaking with convention. Championing a global outlook and a love for regional produce, NOLA’s new crop of inventive chefs are serving up crisp interpretations of local staples, and doing so with mouthwatering results.

The Greatest Place on Earth -- New Orleans | Huffington Post

Can you name the three things in the world that always make you happy? I can. In no particular order they are 1. The Goonies, 2. A burger at the Corner Bistro and 3. Joan Jett singing "Love is All Around" (the Mary Tyler Moore theme song) live. I have decided to add a fourth -- the Crescent City, the Big Easy, New Orleans, LA, or for short, NOLA...

The Big Comeback: Is New Orleans America's Next Great Innovation Hub? | The Atlantic

The Big Easy doesn't want fewer bachelor parties. It just wants more bachelor's degrees.

For much of the last 20 years, the city was wilting in plain sight. In the 1990s, a period during which the U.S. added 21 million jobs, New Orleans didn't just lose jobs; it also lost people. With tourism filling the void left by manufacturing, wages fell way behind the national average. It was place to bring a bachelor party, but not a bachelor's degree, and certainly not a business...
