The resolution was signed by all council members and presented before Toussaint's family and friends at a council meeting.
Toussaint's career as a songwriter, composer, and musician spanned seven decades. He helped to define the New Orleans sound and received wide acclaim and success, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious National Medal of the Arts by President Barack Obama, the highest honor conferred on an artist by the United States.
"Our artists and musicians are our ambassadors, as their talents, hard work, and genius creates the culture for which we are internationally known. Their travels share that culture with countless individuals and communities, and their successes and creations infuse our city with a vibrancy and soul unmatched elsewhere in the world. Allen served our city as one of our finest ambassadors," said New Orleans Council member Susan G. Guidry, District "A."
