Attention, cyclists: This weekend brings a slew of free bike activities to New Orleans - [Curbed New Orleans - All]

Free tours, free lessons, giveaways, and more

Could you use a free bike? A free bike tour? Perhaps you haven’t cycled since grade school and don’t want to put the time-worn maxim to the test. Wherever you fall on the cycling spectrum, there’s an activity for you from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 1, when AARP, Bike Easy, Fit NOLA, and the City of New Orleans present Bike for Life.

“We’re excited to work with the City of New Orleans to develop new community engagement tools that help create streets that are truly built to share, that are built to be safe and accessible for everyone, no matter how they get around,” stated Bike Easy executive director Dan Favre in a press release.

Bike for Life is intended to promote cycling, physical activity, and community engagement. The day starts at 1:15 with free bike-riding training for adults at Ashé Cultural Arts Center (1712 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard). Blue Bikes NOLA will provide free loaner bikes for the session—but supplies are limited, so bring your own bike if you have one.

At 1:30 p.m., a free tour led by Flambeaux Tours’ Eric Gabourel and Bike Easy’s Rob Henig Bell explores the new Connect the Crescent bikeways. Participants will receive raffle tickets and may win one of 10 bikes donated by AARP, among other prizes. Dryades Public Market hosts healthy food cooking demonstrations, and there will be other free activities and classes along the route.
