Multiple kayak companies host Bayou St. John cleanups this month - [Curbed New Orleans - All]

Here’s how to get involved

If you’ve resolved to better your community, spend time outdoors, save money, and exercise more in 2019, then January offers prime opportunities to kill four birds with one stone. Local kayak tour companies host free clean-up events in Bayou St. John this month. Some include free kayak use.

“A big part of our mission at New Orleans kayak tours is leaving places better than we found them,” said David Rack of New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours. That means having frequent clean-ups, but it also means continuing education on preservation and conservation of Louisiana’s endangered wetlands.”

Here are a couple free Bayou St. John clean-up events to put on your calendar.

  • Kayak-iti-Yat and Friends of Bayou St. John co-host a bayou cleanup from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 12. Some boats will be provided, as will bags and water, but participants are encouraged to bring kayaks if they have them. Participants meet at the Shell gas station at 3494 Esplanade Avenue.

  • New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours, Hidden Adventure Tours, Admire NOLA, and New Orleans Pedal Barge co-host a bayou cleanup from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 17. Participants meet at Bayou St. John Ideal Market (3340 Orleans Ave.). Kayaks are provided free, though donations are accepted and benefit an environmental organization.
