Property tax late fees waived for furloughed workers - [Curbed New Orleans - All]

In the wake of the government shutdown, ongoing since December 18, New Orleans city officials have opted to waive late fees for furloughed federal workers who can’t pay their property taxes.

“This is about meeting people where they are and doing the right thing for our residents,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a statement. “Thousands of our Orleans Parish residents have been impacted by the shutdown and are facing financial hardship through no fault of their own. This is one way we can help ease their burden until the crisis is resolved.”

To qualify, furloughed workers should bring their federal IDs and most recent pay stubs to City Hall (1300 Perdido Street) prior to their next payment.

More than 7,000 federal employees in New Orleans have gone without a paycheck since the government shutdown began 33 days ago, when members of Congress refused President Donald Trump’s demand to build a $5.7 million wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Political discourse or disagreement in our democracy is always welcomed,” City Council President Jason Williams said in a statement. “But our disputes as elected leaders should never come before the people who pump life into this system every day.”
