One of two men shot while driving through Hollygrove early Monday (April 22) has died, the New Orleans Police Department said Wednesday.

The 26-year-old shooting victim was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at a local hospital, police said, adding that the investigation has been reclassified from an aggravated battery to a homicide. The victim has not been publicly identified by authorities.

The shooting, which occurred about 2:20 a.m. Monday in the 8900 block of Airline Highway, also wounded a 24-year-old man. The two victims were driving home when someone opened fire, causing them to crash the car, the NOPD said in an initial report.

Both men were taken to the hospital, one with several gunshot wounds to his body and the other with at least one gunshot wound to the arm.

Anyone with additional information on the shooting is asked to call NOPD Homicide Detective Jake Engle at 504-658-5300. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
