Carjacker targeted motorist who stopped to talk with a friend: NOPD

The NOPD also responded Sunday (April 28, 2019) to two shootings, including a triple shooting in the St. Claude neighborhood, and a kidnapping, believed to be domestic-related.

A motorist was robbed at gunpoint Sunday (April 28) while stopping to speak with a friend in the 7th Ward, according to New Orleans police.

The carjacking occurred about 11:30 a.m., when the victim, a 44-year-old man, paused at St. Anthony and North Galvez streets, police said. A man then approached the victim, pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The victim turned over his phone and car keys, and the carjacker fled in the victim’s vehicle down St. Anthony Avenue, turning left onto North Prieur Street, police said.

The NOPD also responded Sunday to two shootings, including a burglary-related shooting and a triple shooting that wounded an 8-year-old girl in the St. Claude neighborhood, and a kidnapping, believed to be domestic-violence-related.

The kidnapping occurred Sunday afternoon at Forshey and General Ogden streets in Hollygrove, police said.

The man accused in the crime, 31-year-old Warren Jenkins, pulled up to the 24-year-old victim’s home about 3:05 p.m. “to return her vehicle,” according to the NOPD. A preliminary police report said the victim got into the driver’s seat “to prevent the suspect from taking the vehicle again," though police could not confirm whether Jenkins had previously stolen the victim’s vehicle.

When the 24-year-old woman began to drive away, Jenkins forced her into the passenger seat and got into the driver’s seat himself, police said in an initial report. Jenkins then drove the vehicle over a large concrete stone on General Ogden Street, said NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney.

Jenkins ran from the scene after driving into the piece of concrete, police said. He is wanted on charges of domestic-abuse battery, simple kidnapping, simple criminal damage to property and theft.

When asked if the victim was injured in the incident, Looney said she refused medical aid at the scene.
