A man charged in the 2015 slaying of a Landry-Walker High School student – which authorities allege stemmed from a dispute over a video game controller – pleaded guilty Wednesday (April 17) to manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Kareem Richards, 23, also pleaded guilty to obstructing justice in a homicide investigation in the Jan. 26, 2015, shooting that killed 17-year-old Tokoyo Palmer.
Criminal District Judge Benedict Willard sentenced Richards under terms of a plea agreement. Palmer’s father approved of the deal, according to District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office.

New Orleans police said Palmer was on his way to school when he was shot multiple times around 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Forest Park Apartments in the 3700 block of Garden Oaks Drive in Algiers. Witnesses said Palmer was wearing a school uniform, and a blue backpack was on the ground at the crime scene.
Palmer's family and friends said at his funeral the teen loved playing video games, participated in the school choir, was a member of ROTC and played junior varsity basketball for Landry-Walker.
Richards was arrested Nov. 12, 2016, after police said he surrendered to the U.S. Marshals. He has been in jail since his arrest.
Assistant District Attorney Kevin Guillory prosecuted the case. Sean Collins and Beth Sgro of the Orleans Public Defenders represented Richards.
