One of two people New Orleans police said were trying to steal a generator from a home in the St. Roch neighborhood was shot in the chest by the home’s resident early Friday (April 19), NOPD said.
The shooting was reported about 2:10 a.m. in the 2300 block of Franklin Avenue, NOPD said. The wounded person’s condition was not immediately known.
A 33-year-old man who lived in the home heard an alarm indicating his shed had been opened, then saw two males in his yard, the report states. The resident “armed himself with two handguns,” the report states, and went outside to confront the people “who were trying to steal his generator.”
Police said one of the males confronted by the resident “turned around and faced” the resident. The resident then fired more than one shot, police said, hitting one of the males in the chest. The second male fled the scene.
The ages of the males accused of trying to steal the generator were not immediately available.
NOPD did not immediately respond to questions about whether the wounded person or the resident would possibly face charges, or if the investigation is ongoing.
The preliminary report on the incident, part of an internal daily log of “major offenses,” referred to the wounded male and the male who fled as “suspects,” and the resident who fired the shots as “victim.” NOPD notes that information in the report, called a “Major Offense Log,” is subject to change as investigations progress.
