‘We have to keep kids inside’: Father fears for safety of his son after Harvey triple shooting

Warren Williams woke up around midnight Friday (April 26) to the sound of gunshots outside his Harvey home and told his 12-year-old son to turn the volume down on the television.

“They are shooting out there, dad!” Williams remembered his son telling him. After the gunfire, Williams went outside to see a man on the ground less than 200 feet from his house with multiple gunshot wounds.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene after police responded to shots fired in the 4200 block of Lac Couture Drive (map), according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office statement released early Friday morning. Two more men, who were also shot, arrived at the hospital shortly after. One died and the other’s vitals were stable as of 5:15 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities have not yet identified the victims. No other details were immediately available, including the ages of the men who were shot or a possible motive in the shooting.

Williams said Friday’s triple shooting is another example of the type of gun violence that plagues his neighborhood and prevents his son, a straight-A student, from enjoying life as he should.

“We have to keep kids inside," Williams said, adding “there isn’t enough protection for them to play outside.”

Williams said he’s noticed fewer police patrolling his neighborhood since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. By his count, there have been about 15 murders in the area since he moved there before the storm.

“It’s sad you see so many people lose their lives and they are young,” Williams said.

Williams said the wounded man he saw Friday outside his home appeared to be in his mid-20s. He said he saw a another bystander pull a shirt out of the trunk of his car and apply pressure to the man’s wounds before police arrived. Williams said he saw multiple gunshot wounds on the man’s legs and side before authorities arrived and told him to move away from the scene.

“It makes you not want to live here anymore,” he said. “Kids can’t go outside and play because there is too much shooting.”

In a 5:15 a.m. statement, JPSO said they are investigating the roles the men played in the shooting. Around 9:30 a.m., a piece of crime tape and two blue medical gloves were in the grass near a puddle of water that appeared to have a reddish tint. A trail of dried blood led across the street to a driveway, which was marked with neon green spray paint, indicating where police had collected evidence hours earlier.

Williams said he saw a woman drive up to the scene after the gunfire had erupted and leave with two of the men who were shot. Williams said authorities didn’t move the other man’s body from the street outside his home until 5 a.m.

He noted high school students in the neighborhood wake up early to catch the bus. He worries about children, including his own, waking up to a crime scene.

“Kids shouldn’t wake up to see bodies outside on the ground,” he said.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
