Carne asada, Baja fish, and breakfast tacos
A corn tortilla, a filling, a scoop of onions, and cilantro. Tacos can be about as basic as it comes, but like any home food they can provoke strong feelings.
Some eaters look for authenticity, some for inventiveness. For others it’s about the flavor of the meat and still for another set, it’s less about the tacos themselves than atmosphere, access to margaritas, and an upbeat vibe. Though only taco joints with permanent, mappable homes fill the list below, it wouldn’t be complete without mention of the portable taco, that quick, and affordable roadside standby of hungry tradesmen and desperate drivers best consumed while sitting on a curb or the hood of a car.
At opposite ends of the crescent, La Coyota in the Lower Ninth and D.F. on the Orleans Jefferson Parish border both garner high praise. And when neither verisimilitude is no longer a priority, consider giving into a Seoul Man with kimchi or a Messin’ with Texas brisket taco from Taceaux Loceaux.
