A 33-year-old woman New Orleans police said was shot dead Tuesday (May 16) when a man now accused of murdering her went to her workplace with a gun was a “beloved member” of the Clover Grill staff, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
Bourbon Street diner’s post included a picture of the slain waitress, identified in the post as Shay de St Germain, smiling big with a purple green and gold tutu, top and wig, and Mardi Gras beads around her neck.
“Those who knew Shay de St Germain knew her as the face of Clover Grill. Her smile was infectious and many a customer came to count on her to brighten their day,” the post states.
The shooting was reported shortly after midnight in the 900 block of Bourbon Street. Darleen M. Jacobs, the lawyer and spokeswoman for the restaurant and its owner, Wood Enterprises, said the shooting happened in the courtyard. It was not immediately clear, Jacobs said, if St. Germain had finished her shift when the shooting occurred.
Alexander Kirby, 33, the accused shooter, was arrested minutes after the shooting, police said. He was the woman’s ex-boyfriend, according to a police source with direct knowledge of the investigation who was not authorized to speak publicly. Kirby was booked around 5:45 a.m. and charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm, jail records show.

An affidavit for a warrant sworn by an NOPD homicide detective states de St Germain was trying to prevent Kirby from approaching her and another person when a struggle ensued and the gun went off, fatally striking her.
Kirby tried to run away, but Louisiana State Police and NOPD officers with the French Quarter Task Force arrested him minutes later, according the affidavit. The woman was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Around 2 p.m. outside the 24-hour diner more than a dozen bouquets of roses and mums rested on a windowsill out front. Passersby slowed to look at a photo of the 33-year-old woman killed posted in the window before walking on.
Jacobs said Clover Grill has operated in that site on Bourbon Street for 65 years without a police incident, and the owners and managers are “devastated.” The Facebook post says management and staff “deeply appreciated” the floral memorial.
Kyle Pollio, whose late night food order he said St Germain knew by heart, rested the first bouquet on Clover Grill’s window sill about 8 a.m.
“She’s just a good person,” said Pollio, who lives in the same block as the restaurant. “It’s not about getting your order, it’s about seeing a friendly face.”
Kirby was scheduled to appear in Orleans Magistrate Court Thursday afternoon for a preliminary hearing but was not transported from jail because of a “medical reason," said Orleans Parish Magistrate Commissioner Jonathan Friedman. Friedman set his bond at $600,000 and rescheduled the hearing for Friday.
The restaurant’s post said it would provide information when it’s available about memorial services.
“Her energy will be sorely missed by friends, family, and customers alike,” the post states.
