A 58-year-old man killed outside an Algiers home in a double shooting early Wednesday (May 1) has been identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office as Joseph Powell.
New Orleans police officers responding to a shooting near the intersection of Wagner and Slidell streets about 1:15 a.m. found the man, now identified as Powell, and another man, 38, outside a home with gunshot wounds, NOPD said. Both were taken to the hospital, where Powell died.
The men were walking in the area when two unknown males got out of a gray, four-door Honda and opened fire, according to a preliminary NOPD report.
A man in the block where the shooting occurred told a reporter about 9 a.m. Wednesday that his brother was killed in the shooting and his son was wounded, which he said occurred near his mother’s home. Around the same time, a tearful woman lay down in the grass near the site of the shooting.
“That’s my uncle,” she said. “I can’t do it no more.”
