Chad McAvoy, 22, was sentenced to the maximum punishment for manslaughter, 40 years in prison, according to the Jefferson Parish district attorney’s office.
McAvoy had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Connie McAvoy, 42. Prosecutors agreed to the reduced charge but demanded he receive the 40-year-sentence, the district attorney’s office said.
Relatives who gave victim impact testimony, including Connie McAvoy’s older son, mother and daughter, were in favor of the plea agreement and called it “best for the whole family,” according to the district attorney’s office.
The shooting occurred at the McAvoys’ Loveland Street home on March 1, 2018. Connie McAvoy got into an argument with her husband shortly after she arrived home that afternoon, authorities said.

She also argued with Chad McAvoy in his bedroom. As she was leaving, Chad McAvoy fired a single shotgun blast at his mother’s back, authorities said.
Connie McAvoy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 3:32 p.m. from Connie McAvoy’s husband reporting that she’d committed suicide.
But detectives quickly surmised that she couldn’t have pulled the trigger herself, not with a gunshot wound to the back, between her shoulder blades, the Sheriff’s Office has said.
Chad McAvoy and his father told investigators each was in another room when they heard a gunshot, the Sheriff's Office said. Both told investigators they believed Connie McAvoy had shot herself before Chad McAvoy tried to place the blame on his father, according to the district attorney’s office.
Chad McAvoy eventually confessed to shooting his mother, the Sheriff’s Office said. In court Monday, McAvoy cried and sat slumped in his chair as relatives testified before Judge Conn Regan of the 24th Judicial District Court. He told the court he had “regret” for killing his mother.
Assistant District Attorneys Kellie Rish and Molly Massey prosecuted the case.
