New Orleans man accused in Chalmette killing: St. Bernard authorities

Matthew Squyres, 35, is accused of second-degree murder in a shooting reported about 8:30 p.m. Saturday (May 4, 2019) in the 3600 block of Shangri-La Drive in Chalmette.

A New Orleans man is accused of killing a Chalmette man who was found fatally shot in his home Saturday night (May 4), according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Squyres, 35, was booked Monday with second-degree murder after authorities say he confessed to the killing, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Authorities have not identified the victim, but investigators said he and Squyres were “acquaintances who had been involved in a prior altercation.”

The fatal shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of Shangri-La Drive in Chalmette.

Responding deputies found bullet holes in the window of the victim’s home. After a failed attempt to get someone to the door, deputies went inside to find the victim lying on the floor, fatally shot.

Squyres has an address in New Orleans East but was captured in Chalmette, authorities said.

He was booked into the St. Bernard Parish jail, where he remained Monday afternoon with no bond yet set.
