An outflow boundary wreaked havoc this afternoon and evening. It shows up on radar as a thin green line moving away from storms. It can indicate strong winds. Earlier this week we had an outflow boundary move over the Causeway and winds gusted to 40 mph. This time the Outflow boundary moved across the Northshore, the Lake and the South Shore. Winds gusted to 33 mph at Hammond, 40 mph on the Causeway and 52 mph at the Lakefront.
An outflow boundary is caused by cold air aloft in a thunderstorm falling to the ground, and then spreading away from the storm. Sometimes you just feel a sudden cool breeze before a storm. That's the outflow boundary. Sometimes it can be a strong wind like we had today. Mariners should always monitor the radar for these outflow boundaries. They can cause serious weather for boaters.
