NOAA is out with the updated hurricane season forecast, and the potential for an above average season. The forecast is for 10-17 storms, 5-9 hurricanes and 2-4 intense. The forecast does include Andrea and Barry. The reasoning for the above average season is that El Nino has died. El Nino is the warm water in the tropical Pacific. It causes strong upper level winds that can prevent tropical development. Water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are running 1/2 degree above average. Warm water is the fuel for tropical systems. The West African Monsoon is also active. This time of the year waves moving off the Coast of Africa are more likely to develop. We are now entering the most active time period for tropical systems.
