The three-day-a-week service stands in for the Central City Library during its move to a new location
This week, Central City Library gears up for its two-block move from the Mahalia Jackson Center (2405 Jackson Avenue) to its new, expanded digs at the Allie Mae Williams Center (2020 Jackson Avenue). Library services at Mahalia Jackson end Thursday, September 26. Operations resume Monday, October 7 at the Allie Mae Williams Center.
There, patrons will enjoy expanded hours, more books, and more services. Renovated by Verges Rome, the Allie Mae Williams Center will have 2,500 more items, public computers, and an area for kids and teens. There are no late fines for youth materials at this library or at any other Orleans Parish library, thanks to a new policy that went into effect September 1.
“Small library fines of $.20 per day can quickly add up over time and often result in not only lost materials, but more importantly, lost library users,” said Circulation and Customer Experience Librarian Heather Riley in a statement. “Fines especially impact children and teens who cannot always control when they can get to a library to return materials.”
The pop-up library that operates from September 26 through October 7 has plenty of kid-friendly resources, including children’s crafts, toys and weekly story time at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. There’s also free wi-fi and all-ages materials. The pop-up library hours are 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
