We narrow down the playing field for best restaurant, design, and casual dining of the year
Today, the process of choosing this year’s stars in the New Orleans restaurant world — the Eater Awards winners for 2019 — continues apace. After fielding many solid ideas from readers during the course of our month-long nomination period, it’s time to narrow the playing field. There are three finalists in three categories: Restaurant of the Year, Design of the Year, and Casual Dining of the Year.
Here they are:
Restaurant of the Year:
Thalia — Consistently delicious food and cocktails in a warm and hospitable setting at reasonable prices, with highlights that include the blackened catfish a la Veracruz, bolognese, and the Tuesday night schnitzel.
Saint-Germain — Two establishments rolled into one, Saint-Germain first opened as a wine bar serving delicious snacks. A few months later it began serving some of the most inventive food in the city via prix fixe dinners that highlight unusual ingredients, techniques, and flavors.
Zasu — The James Beard Award-winning former Gautreau’s chef finally has her own restaurant, an approachable but upscale neighborhood bistro showcasing the gems of the Gulf coast from seafood to vegetables.
Design of the Year:
Bar Marilou — Cozy, elegant, and playful; the swanky bar attached to the Maison de la Luz is outfitted with deep red walls, rich fabrics, dramatic art, and dark wood, creating a distinctly high-design, luxurious vibe not commonly found in New Orleans.
Justine — Beautiful, serene, but edgy; Justin Devillier’s interpretation of a French Brasserie is full of thoughtful detail, from extravagant sculptures behind the bar to the modern artwork lining the dining room walls to the absinthe decanter-inspired fountain in the courtyard.
Jewel of the South — Simple but stunning, the tiny 19th century Creole cottage housing this cocktail bar and restaurant has been transformed into an atmospheric sanctuary perfect for any occasion.
Casual Dining of the Year:
Dian Xin — New Orleans was severely lacking in dim sum options before Diane Ceng and family brought Dian Xin to the French Quarter, and the two-page menu of bao, soups, chive cakes, jianbing, and shu mai is some of the best to hit the city.
Barracuda — People are loving this new taco joint on Tchoupitoulas Street for its homemade tortillas, seasonal specials, margaritas, and atmosphere.
Molly’s Rise and Shine — The breakfast follow-up from Turkey and the Wolf’s Mason Hereford is a must-stop in the LGD for funky, creative food and a vibrant, quirky vibe.
All of these finalists have either opened or come into their own in a new way since we declared the winners last year. All of them were key contributors to making 2019 a great year of eating in New Orleans. So please, take a moment to give these brave finalists a round of applause. Winners will be crowned, with much fanfare, on December 10, 2019.
