Chefs Leighann Smith and Daniel Jackson have purchased the building next door to the shop on Bienville Street

The highly-lauded chefs of Mid City’s buzzy Piece of Meat Butcher Shop and Restaurant are making plans for a neighborhood expansion, reports Mid City Messenger. The pair has purchased the building next door to the shop on Bienville Street in hopes of building a full-service steakhouse.

Leighann Smith and Daniel Jackson, who share the 2018 Eater NOLA Chef of the Year award, opened Piece of Meat in late April 2018. According to Mid City Messenger, they recently purchased the building at 3305-07 Bienville from Milton Gautreaux. Gautreaux had the property rezoned as commercial while hoping to open a breakfast spot, but it still requires approval to open as a restaurant.

Piece of Meat held a neighborhood meeting in the shop last night (January 15) as part of the approval process, with an invitation that stated “the new space would operate as an extension of the existing shop, and full-service steak house, with a classy-but-casual atmosphere.” The plan is to connect the two buildings and add an entrance for the dining area in the newly-acquired space.

Proposed hours for the new restaurant are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Following the neighborhood meeting, the proposal will go before the City Planning Commission and then the City Council for a hearing and vote.
