Tracking the impact of COVID-19 on New Orleans’s food world and how restaurants and diners are responding
Since the first New Orleans-area case of the novel coronavirus was announced one week ago today, circumstances locally and statewide have changed at a rapid-fire pace — including for the food and hospitality industry. First came the cancellation of major food festivals and events that draw thousands to the city, then restrictions on hours and capacity for New Orleans bars and restaurants, followed shortly after by a historic, statewide order closing bars and restaurant dining rooms.
Given that many current New Orleans restaurants experienced what was previously considered a once-in-a-lifetime catastrophe for the industry with Hurricane Katrina, it is perhaps unsurprising that they’ve responded quickly by adding new delivery, drive-thru, and curbside pickup services. Still others won’t be able to pivot as easily, and the long-term viability of operating under current circumstances remains unknown.
This stream tracks the various ways the novel coronavirus pandemic is impacting New Orleans’s restaurant and bar scene, as well as ways restaurants and diners are trying keep the industry thriving locally and nationwide. For more information about COVID-19’s impact on the restaurant world at large, this tag features stories from Eater sites around the world.
