The National Hurricane Center says tropical development is likely in 3-5 days North of the Bahamas. A depression or subtropical or tropical storm will likely form late this week or weekend. If it becomes a storm, the name will be Arthur. The tropical system is forecast to move Northeast into the Atlantic. Early season development is not unusual. Here is a look at the early development over the past few years.
May 20, 2019: Subtropical storm Andrea formed in the West Atlantic.
May 25, 2018: Tropical Storm Alberto formed in the Northwest Caribbean.
April 19, 2017: Tropical Storm Arlene formed east of Bermuda.
January 12, 2016: Hurricane Alex formed in the Northeast Atlantic.
May 28, 2016: Tropical Storm Bonnie formed the same year as Alex. Bonnie formed Northeast of the Bahamas. 2016 did end up being an active year.
May 8, 2015: Tropical Storm Ana formed Southeast of Myrtle Beach.
