After a Year of Pop-Ups, Port Orleans Brings in NY-Based Taco Joint for New Restaurant - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Port Orleans has a new restaurant, Avo Taco | Brasted/Eater NOLA

Avo Taco is now open in the Uptown brewery, long known for its food

More than a year after parting ways with its acclaimed kitchen Stokehold, popular Uptown brewery Port Orleans is shaking up its food offerings with a new permanent restaurant, Avo Taco. The brewery’s partnership with the New York restaurant follows a successful weekend of pop-ups it held at Port Orleans last summer.

Port Orleans Brewing Co., which counts former New Orleans Saint Zach Strief as an investor and co-owner, debuted in 2017 as a brewery with an equal emphasis on food. The kitchen was Stokehold, which offered a beer and food pairing menu created by former High Hat chef Jeremy Wolgamott and Phillip Mariano, who previously cooked at Josephine Estelle. Despite local and national praise, at some point in the last two years the brewery and kitchen parted ways, after which Port Orleans intermittently hosted pop-ups and guest chefs.

A weekend of pop-ups with Avo Taco last June was apparently particularly successful, eventually leading to discussions of a second location for the Long Island restaurant. Avo Taco partner David Hersh lived in New Orleans for many years, which may help explain the far-reaching interest. A news release says the new location has hired “nearly” 10 full and part-time employees from New Orleans, including local restaurant vet Dylan Stafford as general manager.

The Port Orleans’ Avo Taco is serving 12 kinds of “artisanal” tacos, specialty guacamole, street corn, burgers, quesadillas, and kid-friendly options, and offers takeout and catering. It’s open daily at 11 a.m., closing at 7 p.m. on Monday, 8 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 5 p.m. on Thursday, and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
