“With COVID-19, traditional seafood distribution systems have been completely upended,” said the director of the program
An initiative spearheaded by Louisiana State University’s Agricultural Center aims to make it easier for consumers and restaurants to buy Louisiana seafood directly from fishermen, processors, and wholesalers, while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate the industry.
“Traditional seafood distribution systems have been completely upended,” said Thomas Hymel, director of the Louisiana Direct Seafood initiative. Administered by LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant, the goal is to “find new markets and opportunities” for suppliers to sell their seafood. And while many local seafood wholesalers — along with meat, dairy, and produce suppliers — opened up direct-to-consumer sales for the first time during the national shutdown, the initiative hopes to centralize and help facilitate that process.
Louisiana Direct Seafood has created a directory of fishermen and seafood retailers licensed as such in the state who wish to sell to the public, as long as the seafood sold is caught in Louisiana. The campaign will also work to connect suppliers to chefs, restaurants, specialty food markets, and independent grocery chains. There is no cost for businesses to participate.
