Dr. Phil Klotzbach updated his Hurricane Season Forecast, and is calling for an extremely active season. So far we have had 9 named storms, and 2 became hurricanes. Dr. Klotzbach includes those storms in his forecast. He is calling for a total of 24 named storms. 12 become hurricanes. 5 become intense. There are 21 names in the 6 lists of storm names from the World Meteorological Organization. 24 names are forecast, so that means we may go into the Greek Alphabet. We are just entering the active time for Hurricane Season. Right now there is a small low pressure southwest of Bermuda. There is a 10% chance tropical development. Dry air and wind shear will impact it.
NOAA will update the hurricane season forecast Thursday.
It is interesting to compare the Klotzbach updated Hurricane Season Forecast to the 2005 Hurricane Season. There were 27 named storms that year. Klotzbach is forecasting 24 named storms. There were 12 hurricanes, and Klotzbach is forecasting 12 hurricanes. There were 7 major hurricanes. Klotzbach is forecasting 5 major hurricanes. He is also forecasting an above average chance for a major hurricane to hit the United States.
