Election Day closures, food and drink deals, and where to watch election results on November 3
Going into a crucial Election Day on Tuesday, November 3, New Orleans restaurants are encouraging — and in some cases, supporting — voting efforts in various ways, from closing to ensure staff have time to vote, to offering election day specials, to hosting socially-distanced, outdoor viewing parties.
A number of restaurants and bars hosted voter registration drives in the lead-up to early voting in Louisiana (October 16 to October 27), and some even showed up on the first day to feed those waiting in line. For Tuesday, some spots have committed to giving employees paid time off or closing in order to make it easier for them to vote — popular local coffee shop chain French Truck Coffee will close all locations at 11 a.m., for instance, and Cafe Reconcile is closing entirely in observance of the important day.
For those staying open, some are offering free or discounted dishes and drinks to voters (technically, this practice is illegal, but businesses can get around it by extending these specials to everyone, even without proof of voting). And while there are far fewer election night watch parties happening around the city than in 2016, a few businesses will air election results on their outdoor TVs, in some cases due to popular demand.
If your restaurant, bar, bakery, or food business in New Orleans is closed on Election Day, providing meals to the polls, offering food or drink specials, or hosting a watch party, let Eater know. This post will continue to be updated throughout the day.
Restaurants, Bars, Coffee Shops Offering Election Day Deals
Ancora Pizzeria is running pizza happy hour pricing all day, meaning five of its excellent Neapolitan-style pies are on offer for $9 each, from 2 to 9 p.m.
In Marrero, Biere Bar is offering a free domestic beer (with the purchase of another beer) for customers wearing an “I voted” sticker, starting at 1 p.m.
Bywater Bakery has an election night special-take and bake chicken pot pie and slice of blue wave cake combo for $20. Open until 2 p.m.
Dooky Chase’s Restaurant, which historically served as a crucial gathering spot for local civil rights leaders and activists, continues its democratic legacy with a special “Voting Stirs the Pot” election night family meal menu. Serves four to six people for just $46.00.
Gnarly Barley Brewing is offering 20% off to-go beer to voters, noon to 7 p.m.
Parleaux Beer Lab in Bywater is offering a free beer on Election Day to anyone who snaps a pic or selfie outside of their polling location, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Restaurants and Bars Playing Election Results on Patio TVs
At the Broadside Nola, the Broad Theater’s brand new, open-air outdoor venue, an election night party featuring drag performances and commentary is hosted by Laveau Contraire, Tarah Cards and Cucci Licci from 8 to 11 p.m. Masks are required; admission is $10.
While not initially planned, Courtyard Brewery announced today it will air election day results and have someone there spinning vinyl. “If you come, please mask, distance, and behave.”
Beloved Marigny gay bar The Phoenix is hosting an outdoor viewing event on its N. Rampart Street sidewalk starting at 6 p.m., and this one should be fun. Free shots will be distributed when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris win a state, and free spankings offered when Donald Trump and Mike Pence win a state.
