Record breaking hurricane season [ Local Stories]

Subtropical Storm Theta forms in the far East Atlantic about 1000 miles SW of the Azores. It's moving East 15 mph. Max winds 50 mph. It is forecast to get a little stronger up to 60 mph. It is not that Theta is a strong storm, it is that Theta is the 29th storm of the Season. That is more storms than in the record 2005 Hurricane Season. In 2005 there were 28 storms, 15 became hurricanes and 7 of those became Major Hurricanes. 2005 had the likes of Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Wilma had the lowest pressure ever recorded in a hurricane. It dropped to 882 mb, and the winds were as high as 185 mph. The 2020 Hurricane Season has now had 29 named storms, 12 became hurricanes and 5 became major hurricanes. This year did not have the number of major hurricanes or the intensity of major hurricanes that 2005 had. We did have hurricanes like Laura and Delta that wreaked havoc on Louisiana. Laura made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana with winds of 150 mph.

We continue to watch Eta. Eta is 90 miles NNW of the West tip of Cuba. It is slowing down. Moving SW 9 mph. It is getting better organized, and may intensify briefly over the warm water. Eta is forecast to turn northward and deal with very dry air and strong winds aloft. It will linger in the Gulf of Mexico maybe into Saturday. it is forecast to make landfall somewhere along the North Central Gulf. It may be only a depression or even a remnant low. Our rain chances are higher for Saturday for the potential of some Eta impacts. It will be something to monitor.
