In the Crescent City, brunch is a sacred ritual, definitively a lingering affair — and the menu must involve booze. And that’s probably the only definition that matters, considering the contributions the city has made to the nation’s brunching habits.
Fervently embraced by millennials, brunch has its roots in a mid-19th century New Orleans restaurant called Madame Begue’s. It served only one meal — “second breakfast.” Discovered by tourists during the 1884 World’s Fair, it soon became known as brunch. And those jazz brunches? Commander’s Palace was the first to do that.
