16 New Orleans Restaurants for Gluten-Free Dining - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Poke Loa | Poke Loa/Facebook

Have your gluten-free cake, and eat it too

New Orleans would hardly be New Orleans without po-boys on airy loaves of New Orleans-style French bread, little white clouds of beignets, dense and sweet bread pudding, roux-based gumbos, and muffulettas on bread the size of a plate — none of which spells hospitality to the gluten-free folks.

On the other hand, New Orleans is also home to lots of naturally gluten-free food like boiled seafood, seafood fried in cornmeal and other gluten-free flours, Bananas Foster, and Vietnamese cuisine using rice flour as the starch. Beyond that, more restaurants beyond the usual suspects are accommodating gluten-free diets. Here, now, are Eater’s top spots for gluten-free dining in New Orleans.

New Orleans’s Essential Breakfast Spots - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Brennan’s famous eggs Benedict | Brennan’s/Facebook

After all, it’s the most important meal of the day

New Orleanians love nothing more than lingering at breakfast, enjoying conversation and sometimes cocktails during the most important meal of the day. Thankfully, there are a lot of stellar breakfast spots in New Orleans, from a neighborhood hang-out with locally-honed grits and grillades; a diner with a basic egg, biscuit, and bacon breakfast; or something that feels more like a celebration — with white tablecloths, Louisiana crabmeat, and Champagne.

Keep in mind that this list isn’t about brunch, that critical weekend institution in New Orleans. What follows is a guide to restaurants to satisfy a breakfast craving despite the situation or location, on pretty much any day of the week.

Don't see an essential New Orleans breakfast spot? Leave a comment or send Eater a tip. Maps are always listed geographically.

The 38 Essential New Orleans Restaurants, Fall 2019 - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Lamb chops from Saffron NOLA, new to the Eater 38 | Saffron NOLA/Official

Where to find the freshest fried Gulf oysters, spiciest handmade boudin, and more

It's time for the summer update of the Eater 38, the answer to any question that begins, "Where should I go to eat?"

This highly elite group of destinations are the places to go to tonight, tomorrow, and again and again. They are are places that must exist, that have had a major impact on or represent the constantly evolving culinary canon of New Orleans.

Every quarter Eater drops a few restaurants from the list, usually still great, to keep the map fresh, and introduces establishments with increasing relevance to the city’s contemporary dining scene. For the third update of 2019, the 38 says so long — for now — to Bistro Daisy, Ba Mien, and Clancy’s, and welcomes Marjie’s Grill, Barrow’s Catfish, and Saffron Nola.

To be included, a restaurant has to have been open for at least six months. Send your nominations here. And if you’re looking for the hottest places in town right now instead of the most tried and tested, turn to the Eater Heatmap instead.

10 Cool Ice Cream Spots in New Orleans - [Eater New Orleans - All]

The best places to get a scoop right now

Ice Cream isn't necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of frozen New Orleans treats. The city is home to exceptional sno-balls and daiquiris, and when it comes to ice-cream, this is more of a gelato town, to be quite honest. With all that in mind, you can still find some amazing ice cream (and gelato and sorbetto) this summer in New Orleans. Here are the coolest ice cream spots in town.

Don't see your favorite spot for ice cream and gelato? Leave a comment or send Eater a tip.

The 38 Essential New Orleans Restaurants, Spring 2019 - [Eater New Orleans - All]

A snapshot of New Orleans dining

It's time for the winter update of the Eater 38, your answer and ours to any question that begins, "Can you recommend a restaurant?"

This highly elite group of destinations are the places that you should go to tonight, tomorrow, and again and again. These are places that must exist, places that have impacted or represent the constantly evolving culinary canon of New Orleans.

The Eater 38 is updated quarterly, and are listed geographically rather than ranked. This quarter, we say goodbye to Casamento’s due to its annual hibernation from late May through September, the far-feeling Harbor Seafood in Kenner, and Compere Lapin, which is buzzer than ever (versus essential) since the arrival of Nina Compton’s second restaurant, the neighborhood Bywater American Bistro.

We welcome Italian-French favorite Irene’s, having retained its charm after a year in its new Bienville Street digs, the beloved and intimidating Jewish-Italian deli Stein’s, and the superbly welcoming McHardy’s Chicken & Fixins, a Broad Street staple. Each of these spots help give identity, structure, and spirit to their neighborhoods, and by extension the city’s collective culinary landscape.

All restaurants must have been open at least six months to appear on this list. Send your tips, nominations, and disagreements right here. And if you’re looking for the hottest places in town instead of the most tried and tested, turn to the Eater Heatmap instead.

The 17 Essential New Orleans Coffee Shops - [Eater New Orleans - All]

French Truck Coffee in the LGD

Where to get a cup of joe

New Orleans has seen exponential growth in the last several years when it comes to coffee. While coffee-geek shops focused on quality and third wave (ie. tree-to-cup) programs have become ragingly popular here, there are still many coffee shops that throwback to an earlier era when college students, writers, and neighborhood characters ruled the scene.

This map covers all the best local spots, whether you're in dire need of some cold brew, a frozen coffee, a pour-over, a cafe au lait, or just a cup of joe and some quiet time with some free Wi-Fi on a comfy couch. For this update, we said goodbye to currently closed, kid-friendly Cafe au Play, and welcomed the French Quarter’s cheeky Arrow Cafe, Fat Boy Pantry in the LGD, the new Mid City location of Revelator Coffee Company, and neighborhood gem Treme Coffeehouse.

These are the tried and true spots that any local would recommend, with a little something from every neck of the woods.

Please note: These are not ranked, but listed by neighborhood.

17 Essential Spots for Boiled Crawfish - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Where to eat crawfish in and around New Orleans

Narrowing a list of crawfish spots in and around the Crescent City to under two dozen is a nearly impossible task. There are tons of places and many, many of them are excellent. This group, listed by neighborhood rather than ranking, represents one little handful of Eater’s favorites right now.

The list doesn’t take into account the restaurants that are doing boiled crawfish as a special from time-to-time or the bars that hold regular boils during the season. Most of these spots are places that actually specialize in boiled seafood and many of them share space with a fresh seafood market.

We’ll update the list next season, so if we missed one of your favorites, send us a tip.

15 Kid-Friendly Restaurants That Go Beyond Chicken Tenders and Free Crayons - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Breweries, steak houses, and more

There are few restaurants in New Orleans that aren’t kid-friendly, but some go far beyond free crayons and chicken tenders.

Eater searched out restaurants that had kids’ menus with items that weren’t just carbs and cheese in varying shades of beige. It found quite a food where it wasn’t just tolerated for kids to get up and wander, but encouraged.

And importantly — every single restaurant on this list is great for adults too (there’s not a Chucky Cheese to be found on it). Ranging from casual to fine dining, all but one sell booze.

Know of a kid-friendly restaurant we missed? Do let us know. Send an email.
