Blood found around the bedroom of a man who was killed in a 2016 Gentilly Terrace homicide led New Orleans Police to arrest a 46-year-old man on a murder charge Monday (May 6).
Warfield Johnson was booked on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Kevin Foots Sr., 55. Foots was shot eight times inside his apartment on July 7, 2016. The home exploded three days later in an apparently unrelated event, killing one person, though no foul play was suspected in the blast.
Witnesses at the homicide scene in the 2600 block of Jasmine Street described seeing two suspects. According to an affidavit for Johnson’s arrest warrant, police determined he and a 25-year-old man were suspects in the case, based on descriptions from witnesses.

One witness told police that the 25-year-old man might have cut himself climbing into Foots’ bedroom window. Police found blood underneath an exterior wall of the home, as well as inside the home near the bedroom window, on the side of Foots’ headboard. Two samples of the blood were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory and DNA from the blood was matched with Johnson’s, according to the affidavit.
Johnson had previously denied to detectives that he was at the apartment or in the area at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.
At an initial court appearance, Johnson was assigned a public defender and his bond was set at $450,000.
The 25-year-old man named in Johnson’s arrest documents as a second suspect did not appear in Orleans Parish jail records Friday. It was not immediately clear if he had been arrested or if an arrest warrant has been issued for him.
