An 18-year-old woman, released from jail earlier this week, was rebooked Friday (May 10) with manslaughter in connection with an attempted car burglary that left a woman dead and her husband wounded, according to New Orleans police.
Byrielle Hebert was initially booked Thursday with possession of stolen things. Her bond was set at $2,500, and she was released that day from the Orleans Justice Center jail, court records show.
Hebert is the girlfriend of 17-year-old Emanuel Pipkins, charged with second-degree murder in Wednesday’s deadly burglary attempt in the 2700 block of Cleveland Avenue, according to a WWL-TV report.
The news station reported that a magistrate judge did not learn of Hebert’s alleged connection to the deadly shooting—which killed 63-year-old Zelda Townsend and wounded Townsend’s husband—until late Thursday.
The “stolen thing” Hebert is accused of possessing: a car used in the deadly shooting, the news station reported.
Following further investigation by the NOPD, Hebert was re-arrested Friday on the manslaughter charge, along with charges of simple burglary and criminal conspiracy to commit simple burglary.
Her bond had not been set as of late Friday, according to court records.
‘Just shoot him’: Affidavit details car burglary attempt that ended in Mid-City woman’s death
The shooting occurred Wednesday night, after Townsend heard a car alarm outside her Mid-City home, prompting her husband to walk outside to find a person in the back seat of their vehicle. Townsend’s husband blocked the intruder from exiting the car, and Townsend went outside and handed her husband a gun, an NOPD homicide detective wrote in an affidavit.
The intruder, later identified as Pipkins, “began firing at Zelda Townsend” and her husband, according to the affidavit for Pipkins’ arrest warrant.
Officers arrived to find Townsend fatally shot in the head, the NOPD said. Townsend’s husband, who had returned fire, was shot in the arm.
Pipkins was also struck in the shootout, arriving at the hospital with a wound to his back. He was booked into the Orleans Justice Center jail following his release from the hospital.
Orleans Parish Magistrate Commissioner Jonathan Friedman set Pipkins’ bond at $750,000, court records show.
Police have not described Hebert’s alleged role in the fatal shooting, but arrest documents for Pipkins show a woman described as his girlfriend could be tied to a gray Acura sedan used in the crime.
According to the documents, Pipkins’ aunt and legal guardian saw him about 8 p.m. Wednesday leaving their home with his girlfriend in a gray Acura sedan. A car of that description was later seen fleeing the Cleveland Avenue crime scene, according to police.
Officers canvassing the area after the fatal shooting found the Acura at St. Philips and North Miro streets. The car had been reported stolen prior to the shooting, officers learned. Pipkins’ aunt told police she believed the Acura belonged to Pipkins’ girlfriend’s relative. The affidavit does not make clear if the aunt would have known the Acura was reported stolen.
A booking photo of Hebert was not available late Friday.
