For those who've never been, New Orleans immediately calls to mind images of Mardis Gras and the French Quarter, but it is such a sprawling and diverse city, that after a few trips, no one image can properly take hold. Like the music it made famous, it's the impromptu breaks and changes that separate it from similar endeavors. Though it's a relatively small city, it differs from any and all that I've visited in the sheer number of distinct neighborhoods, each with their own sub-culture, history and community.
