The Deepwater Horizon aftermath

Surface burning of oil slicks during the Deepwater Horizon event.

Researchers have analyzed 125 compounds from oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico to determine their longevity at different contamination.

The scientists have now analyzed long-awaited data from the Natural Resource Damage Assessment to determine the specific rates of biodegradation for 125 major petroleum hydrocarbons -- compounds from the oil that settled to the deep ocean floor when DWH's Macondo well discharged 160 million gallons. Through that analysis, the team found that a number of factors influence how long the impact of such an oil spill lasts. Their results appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Jazz in the Park Fundraiser to Benefit Armstrong Park Music Series | Offbeat Magazine

On Wednesday, February 27, the People United for Armstrong Park (PUfAP) will host their first annual spring soiree, dubbed “Sowing Seeds in Sacred Ground,” to raise funds for this year’s Jazz in the Park series as well as other community initiatives. Performing at the fundraiser will be Bill Summers, Chris Severin, Khris Royal, Ricky Sebastian, Donald Harrison, Zulu Connection, the Baby Dolls, the Black Feather Mardi Gras Indians, and the New School Brass Band.

Karen Lozinski, Director of Public Relations for PUfAP, says that the spring soiree will be “akin to what we do during Jazz in the Park, but in a slightly more refined, ‘evening out’ kind of way,” with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction.

Greater New Orleans area receives over $485,000 for Green Endeavors | US EPA

PA Region Administrator Al Armendariz announced that EPA is awarding $487,500 in environmental justice, job training and education grants to the Greater New Orleans Area. The projects will recruit and train people for environmental jobs and provide air quality sampling. Regional Administrator Armendariz was joined by Charles Allen, Director of Environmental Affairs for the City of New Orleans, at the press conference where they highlighted the impact the investment will have on the city post Katrina.

“EPA is committed to creating green jobs and reaching out to low-income and minority communities that often bear the brunt of environmental degradation,” said EPA Regional Administrator Al Armendariz. “This grant will help extend and enrich our effort to clean up all communities by adding more sustainable jobs to the Greater New Orleans area - a region Administrator Jackson is personally and professionally dedicated to revitalizing.”

Recipients and Awards:

Louisiana Green Corps: $300,000 environmental job training grant to train low-income residents over a two year period in three environmentally focused tracks: Energy Efficiency and Green Building; Solar and/or Solar Thermal Installation; and Materials Reuse, Deconstruction and Recycling.

Global Green USA: $100,000 Green Jobs Pilot Program grant providing job training for local youth and job placement with local, small construction contractors. With the support of the Department of Energy and the City of New Orleans, Global Green USA's NOLA Wise program stimulates the market for energy efficiency retrofits, providing contractors and apprentices with a steady stream of employment.

Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development: $32,500 Pollution Control grant in partnership with Nurtured World which provide residents of the Lower Ninth Ward with training on energy efficiency in their community.

Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association: $30,000 Environmental Education grant providing local youth with training to monitor and measure air quality in New Orleans East neighborhood.

The Louisiana Bucket Brigade: $25,000 Environmental Justice grant providing air quality sampling in and around industrial areas of Southeast Louisiana.

Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training grant funds are provided to nonprofit organizations and other eligible entities to recruit, train and place predominantly low-income and minority unemployed and under-employed residents from solid and hazardous waste-impacted communities.

Trainees learn the skills needed to secure full-time, sustainable employment in the environmental field, including a focus on assessment and cleanup activities. These grants help to create green jobs that reduce environmental contamination and promote sustainability in communities throughout the nation.

EPA’s Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training Program helps train people for jobs in the assessment, cleanup and redevelopment of brownfields properties, including abandoned gas stations, old textile mills, closed smelters and other abandoned industrial and commercial properties. These investments target under-served and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods – places where environmental cleanups and new jobs are most needed. EPA awarded its first Job Training Grant through the Brownfields program in 1998.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Community Partnership Grants Informational Workshop

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will hold an informational workshop to explain the guidelines and procedures for the 2011-2012 Community Partnership Grants cycle.

Date: Monday, Aug. 22
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: The Jazz & Heritage Gallery, 1205 N. Rampart St. (map)

The informational workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 22, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Jazz & Heritage Gallery, 1205 N. Rampart Street.
Staff from the Jazz & Heritage Foundation will be on hand to explain the application process for the currently open categories in the Foundation’s Community Partnership Grants program.  This is a great opportunity to ask questions about how particular projects may or may not fit within the grant guidelines.
The categories now open include two for education  – including a new category to support arts education in public schools – and one for nonprofit presenters of cultural events.
The two education categories are:
• Jazz & Heritage After-School and Summer Education Programs in Music, Arts and Cultural Traditions. This category, which has been awarded in years past, supports after-school and summer educational arts programs offered by nonprofit organizations and educational institutions.
• Jazz & Heritage In-School Music & Arts Education is a new offering from the Jazz & Heritage Foundation. This category, now in its second year, supports in-school music and arts education programs at public elementary, middle and high schools in the greater New Orleans region. Schools may apply for funding to purchase or repair instruments and other supplies, or to cover part of a teacher’s salary.
The third category that is now open for applications – the one for nonprofit presenters of cultural events – is called Jazz Journey Presenting: Festivals and Concerts in Music and Performing Arts. This category is open nonprofit organizations that hire Louisiana musicians or other performing artists to perform for the public.
The application deadline for all three grant categories is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011. That is the time by which applications must be received at the Jazz & Heritage Foundation office.
Copies of the grant guidelines and application forms are available online at the Community Partnership Grants web site, and from the Foundation office.

Threadhead Records Foundation Announces Inaugural Round Of Grant Funding

The Threadhead Records Foundation (a 501(c)3 non-profit) is pleased to announce its inaugural round of grant funding. Specifically, the Foundation has been launched to further promote the cultural heritage of New Orleans through grants and assistance to musicians whose music is in this tradition. The Foundation seeks to assist those musicians whose work is in this style and do not have the resources to produce and distribute their work, or in some cases to actively create their music because they lack basic financial resources to sustain their lives.  The purpose of these grants is to support musicians in creating music projects to encourage and promote New Orleans music and cultural heritage.

Applications for funding are invited from individuals and organizations residing in the State of Louisiana that support Threadhead Records Foundation's mission of promoting the cultural heritage of New Orleans. Applications for Round 1 Grant Funding commence December 7, 2009 and close January 3, 2010. Notification of grant awards will be sent by letter and e-mail by January 15, 2010. The proposed activity funded by this grant must occur between February 1, 2010 and May 1, 2010.

Up to three grants will be funded in this cycle. The maximum amount of a grant request is $4,000. Grant awards may be for less than the amount requested.
