New Brewpub Will Bring Acclaimed Chef’s Viet-Cajun Creations to Bywater - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Chef Anh Luu with a famous phoritto at her Portland restaurant, Tapalaya | Tapalaya/Facebook

Bywater Brewpub’s kitchen will be led by Anh Luu, a New Orleans native who owned a Viet-Cajun restaurant in Portland

The Bywater neighborhood is getting a new 75-seat brew pub, and the kitchen will be led by talented New Orleans native Anh Luu, who most recently owned a successful Viet-Cajun restaurant in Portland before returning to the city last year.

Creatively called Bywater Brewpub, Gambit reports that the restaurant and microbrewery will serve five to eight beers and the Vietnamese-Cajun mashup items Luu cooks, like crawfish etouffee nachos and double-fried chicken wings with brown butter fish sauce.

Luu was born in New Orleans to Vietnam War refugees, ending up in Portland after Hurricane Katrina derailed her college plans. In 2013, Luu became head chef at Portland restaurant Tapalaya, where she became known for viral phorrito pop-ups and earned rave reviews. After five years and a semifinalist nod for Eater Young Guns 2016, she bought Tapalaya from owners in 2017. Last year she sold the restaurant and returned to New Orleans following the death of her mother.

Bywater Brewpub is located in the former Copperworks warehouse building at 3000 Royal Street, a former glassblowing studio (Mitchell Gaudet’s Studio Inferno, now in Arabi). Owner Nahum Laventhal tells Gambit that Sonny Day, previously at Urban South Brewery and Abita Brewing Co., will oversee the beer.

Laventhal expects to open Bywater Brewpub in April.

New Training Program Aims to Diversify New Orleans’s Bar Community - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Adryan Lagarde, Turning Tables student, at a Hotel Peter and Paul event January 20, 2020 | Katherine Kimball/Eater NOLA

Liberty’s Kitchen has teamed up with Toure Folkes to create Turning Tables, a 12-week bar and training program

A new bar and spirits training program dedicated to growing a more inclusive and diverse bar community in New Orleans showcased its inaugural class on Monday night (January 20), with a party at year-old Marigny hotspot Hotel Peter and Paul, home of the acclaimed Elysian Bar.

Called Turning Tables, the training is now part of the work done by local nonprofit Liberty’s Kitchen, which has been providing restaurant and hospitality training to underserved young adults for years. The 12-week program was created by local bartender and consultant Toure Folkes, with the help of a grant from the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, host of the annual spirits conference held in the city.

In addition to training, Turning Tables intends to increase “professional opportunities within New Orleans’ thriving hospitality industry” for underserved youth. It features a mentorship program that links students with veteran bartenders who provide hands-on training in their own spots; includes distillery and brewery trips, guest speakers, and a number of working events like Liberty’s Kitchen’s Come Grow With Us, MiNo Foundation’s Pass the Peas, and “Thirteenth Night is For King Cake” by Cantine at Molly’s Rise and Shine.

The event at Hotel Peter and Paul (with pop-ups by Midnight Noodle, Fowlmouth, and Las Abuelas) was the first event intended to combine food, music, and cocktails to showcase the students’ newly-learned skills and help connect them further with the New Orleans bar community.

Turning Tables is seeking mentors for its 2020 class, and prospective students can apply to be part of the program here.

Nearly 200 New Orleans-area bars selling to minors | The New Orleans Advocate

More than 100 New Orleans-area businesses were cited by the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control this summer for selling alcohol and/or tobacco to minors.

Notable establishments such as House of Blues, Ye Olde College Inn, Borgne and Mahony's Po-Boys were issued citations.

The ATC said it conducted 5,474 compliance checks during the agency’s 2015 summer crackdown and issued 821 citations. Of those citations, 460 were issued for alcohol sales to a minor, and 361 were issued for tobacco sales to a minor.

About 15 percent of the businesses checked sold alcohol and/or tobacco to a minor.

Hangover helpers: What's your cure for too many cocktails? | NOLA.com #totc

"The downside to drinking is, of course, the hangover, an unpleasant topic that has come up numerous times during Tales of the Cocktail's 11 years of seminars and parties," writes Judy Walker. Where to Drink During Tales of the Cocktail | The Daily Meal #TOTC

New Orleans knows how to put on a party: where to drink whether you’re boozing at TOTC or not. Cocktails and New Orleans go together like Cajun bites and Sno-balls. It’s no secret that New Orleans may just be home to the most burgeoning cocktail scene in, dare we say, the country (no offense, New Yorkers), so it only makes sense that New Orleans puts on the biggest cocktail party of the year: the Tales of the Cocktail, held July 17 to 21.

The Wine Enthusiast Guide to New Orleans | Wine Enthusiast

Spring marks the best time to travel to The Crescent City. It’s warm, yet summer’s sweltering heat has yet to arrive and the city as a whole has released its proverbial exhale after Mardi Gras. While best known for its pre-Lenten bacchanalia, The Big Easy isn’t all beads and booze. No, it’s mostly booze—and wine, and envelope-pushing food and a whole mess of charming, fun-loving folks who know how to appreciate the decadent bounties of life.

New Orleans Has a Soup That Supposedly Cures Hangovers | The Atlantic

The Aimless Cook/Flickr

For years, revelers who have consumed immoderate quantities of beer at Bullets or a raft of hurricanes at Pat O'Briens have stumbled to take-out joints for a steaming bowl of this brothy elixir. There just seems to be something about it that makes you feel alive in the morning – thus its nickname "Old Sober." That "something" turns out to be mostly salt and fat, according to Mitchell, which help your body deal with the liver-punching effects of alcohol.

Here's the yakamein cure in action: The big bowl of liquid is loaded with sodium to replace all the salts that your body whizzes away due to alcohol's diuretic properties. The unctuous brisket sits in your stomach like a heavy sponge, slowing down the body's absorption of alcohol. The B-complex vitamins in the green onions might help ease an impending headache by preventing an accumulation of glutaric acid. That egg plays a part, too...

New Orleans Cocktail History | The Daily meal

America has a long history of cocktails (one that gets fuzzier the more of them you drink), but there’s a special place in the heart of all drink aficionados for the city of New Orleans. Besides the fact that New Orleans never really allowed Prohibition to take effect, it also has remained a bastion for what many might call "serious" cocktails. As Abigail Deirdre Gullo of SoBou explains, "When the rest of the country fell into the dark ages of vodka sodas and cosmos, people were still drinking rye whiskey here."

SoBou's bar chef Abigail Deidre Gullo explains the unique place of New Orleans in the history of boozy drinks...

New Orleans cracks down on problem bars | WVUE-TV

When Alcohol and Tobacco Control agents raided the Sports Vue bar last year, owner Carlton Charles was among dozens arrested. He pleaded guilty to several felony counts, including conspiring to distribute narcotics.

The city is asking neighbors to report nuisance bars, so that ATC can investigate. The ATC is adding ten additional reserve agents to work in the city limits. That will double the number of agents in New Orleans.
